Study of Juliets Charachter in Shakespeares, Romeo and Juliet Essay Romeo and Juliet is a tragic play created by the well-known writer: William Shakespeare. He was a play wright and poet born in Stratford-upon-Avon on April 23rd. Shakespeare was born in 1564 and died in 1616. He had 4 children, twins, Suzanna and Judith, and a son, Hamnet. The dramas Shakespeare devised were mainly comedies happy endings, tragedies tragedy and death or histories historic interpretations of peoples lifestyles. His exquisite plays were set in the Globe theatre, but it was later burnt to the ground by puritans; they were thought to have burnt down the Globe theatre because they objected to the singing and music that Shakespeare encouraged his actors to perform. Some of the well-known plays William wrote were, Hamlet, Tempest, Macbeth, A Mid Summer Nights Dream, and of course the legendary Romeo and Juliet. In my essay, I will be focusing on Romeo and Juliet, it is a tragedy with two lovers that intend to marry, but fatally there crude plans are deformed by the war between the Capulets and the Montagues. They were two families that hated each other for a reason forgotten, but because it was carried on throughout there lives, the two oppositions decided to continue the inevitable frenzy. I will concentrate on the ways in which Juliet portrays every aspect of her personality. At the beginning of the play Juliet is perceived to be a quiet, well-mannered daughter of Lady Capulet. She lives with her parents in a mansion and was brought up by a very outspoken Nurse. In the play the Nurse has an excellent relationship with Juliet as she brought her up and treated her like her own daughter. The Nurse is a very sincere woman that worries for Juliet throughout the catastrophic story. The Nurse and Juliet have a very close bond so whenever Juliet needs someone to talk to she turns to her Nurse. She is dependable on her parents guidance, as that is the only time she can engage with them in conversation, and she respects and values her mother and father very well. As the play progresses, Juliet becomes more independent and doesnt rely on her parentage to supply her with right decisions, she begins to think for herself and fend for herself. This leads to the young Capulet transforming into a respectable young lady. Juliet appears to be rather perceptive. In Act One, Scene three, when Lady Capulet is talking to her daughter about the near future, she seems to be lacking directness. Juliets mother is passionate about her daughter marrying yet she avoids the suggestion at first. Before she asserts her wishes, the young Capulet states, It is an honour I dream not of when asked about marriage. Juliet seems to second guess her mothers intentions she realises the true purpose of Lady Capulets visit. And so she explains her point of view, discreetly, by seeming quite unmoved by wedlock. In this scene, Juliet and Lady Capulet do not seem to be very close. This is showed incredibly well. Juliet is in her room, when she is called upon by her mother. Lady Capulet comes to see her daughter to ask her about the social status of matrimony. Juliet curiously says How now, who callsthis suggests that Juliet doesnt get muchvisits. Juliet has a very diverse relationship with her mother to that of the Nurse; they have no maternal bonding or connection that a normal mother and daughter would usually have. We know this because when the Nurse says Your mother Juliet responds very formally and replied: Madam, I am here, what is your will? This response shows Juliet feels she has to put on a mask to cover any impolite or inaccurate gestures in speaking to her mother; and from this line we are given the indication that there is no affection between the two relatives. The relationship is very distant because when the Nurse asks Lady Capulet how old Juliet is she does not know. Even tho ugh they are not very close, Juliet respects and values the views of her mother, because she is open minded when she is asked about nuptials. A sense of fairness, along with a polite approach, is demonstrated by Juliet. As a way of Juliet meeting her suitor, Paris, Lady Capulet has organised a ball for this to happen. The young Capulet has a duty to introduce herself to the bachelor. Juliet responds by saying, Ill look to like, if looking liking more Firstly, Juliet is following her mothers will. In agreeing to do this, she is respectful of her parents. Secondly, Juliet is fair because she is not closed to the opportunity provided, in other words, she is an open minded young lady. Throughout Act One Scene Three, Juliet is seen to be both clever and deceitful. When the Nurse is talking too much Juliet shoes a completely different side to her polite, well-mannered usual profile. While the nurse is showing her enthusiasm on the topic, she is interrupted when Juliet says And stint thou too, I pray thee, Nurse, say I. Juliet shows how intelligent she can be by disguising the disrespectful way she spoke to her Nurse to spare her feelings by saying I pray thee This also shows how deceitful young Juliet can be because she successfully manages to alter the perception of her impolite behaviour towards her guardian. The way Juliet reacts to different situations changes repeatedly right through this scene. At this time and moment Juliet is demonstrating her respect and loyalty towards her mother. Lady Capulet is sceptical until Juliet says, Your consent gives strength to make it fly when asked about meeting Paris. Juliet does not make her own decisions and is dependant on her parents. I know this because she says she will only try and like him because her parents want her to. She doesnt argue with her mother, she immediately says yes, without hesitating, this shows that Juliet can be easily manipulated. Juliet can be seen to be both immature and open minded. When Juliet is questioned about getting married to a man she has never met, she is open to the suggestion. She says Ill look to like, if looking liking move. In other words, she will look at him and see if she likes him and if she admires his appearance, she might give Paris a chance. She is amateur because she is going to judge Paris on his physical appearance. The way in which Juliet is open minded is because she says to her mother that she is willing to participate in the party and see if the bachelor lives up to the expectations that the Nurse described to her. The party begins, but soon enough gate crashers arrive, the Montagues, Juliet sees Romeo and he catches her attention. She falls for him because he is wearing a mask, and she is intrigued. When Juliet converses in chatter with Romeo for the first time, she seems to be pious, quick-witted and loyal. Romeo and Juliet are in the Capulets hall in the mansion and they meet for the first time. When Romeo suggests, O then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do: They pray grant thou, lest faith turn to despair. Juliet reacts quickly with an excellent alibi, saying: Saints do not move though for prayers sake. She defends herself with religion showing she does not want to take her infatuation any further, staying faithful to her parents wishes. Clever Juliet uses excuses rapidly as a barrier separating herself from Romeo, whereas in Act One Scene Three, she was slow understanding things. Now, she knows she must listen to Romeo and reply quickly; to ensure nothing happens between them and to continue to be true to her mothers dream; thus explaining her fast, well-informed justifications. Juliet reveals the inconsiderate, doubtful part of her nature. Romeo and Juliet show their fondness of each other by kissing. Romeo kisses Juliet after Juliet was protesting why they should not kiss. After they share their first kiss, Juliet says, Then have my lips, the sin that they have taken. The kiss between the two lovers is described by Juliet as a sin. Significantly, this shows Juliet thinks the kiss stole a portion of her purity, making her less holy. Calling the kiss a sin makes Juliet appear inconsiderate of other peoples feelings. Romeo could have been hurt by the way Juliet expressed the kiss. The young Capulet feels guilty about what she has done. She believes she has made mistake by choosing to kiss Romeo. Yet she still kisses him again. The challenging character can be very doubtful at times, but still goes ahead with any problems she has to face. In Act one Scene five, Lady Capulets outgoing daughter, Juliet, is seen to be demanding -like her mother- disloyal and immature. The Nurse and Juliet are standing by the door watching the eager guests departing as the party is over. The gathering that was supposed to being Paris and Juliet together, but was the ending of the possibility, as Juliet met her star crossd lover. Juliet eagerly states Go ask his name. If he be married. My grave is like to be my wedding bed. She inherited her bossy, demanding behaviour from her mother. She sends the Nurse away, as if it is the Nurses duty to carry out all the jobs Juliet wants to be done. Juliet tries to act like her mother, although she unsuccessfully mirrors her mothers personality. The immaturity of her frame of mind shines through as she explains that she will die unmarried. This shows Juliet is desperate to find a partner so that she will not die unmarried. Whereas in Act one Scene three Juliet exclaimed marriage as an honour I dream not of. She has changed her mind again, and is also being disloyal to her mothers wishes by instructing the Nurse to ask his name. Again she is acting in the opposite way that she carried herself in Act one Scene three. In Act one Scene three, Juliet was respectful of her mothers wishes and was open minded to look to like, if looking liking move. You begin to recognise that Juliet is naà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ve and desperate throughout this scene. Juliet is standing by the door with the Nurse; the Nurse tells Juliet finds out that her true love is a Montague, her worst enemy. When Juliet finds out that Romeo is the son of her greatest enemy, she is saddened by the horrific idea and says, My only love sprung from my only hate. Too early seen unknown, and known too late. This gives me the impression that Juliet can be very naà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ve, because her family enforce the idea that she should hate the Montagues, and that is the only reason she hates them. Showing she is just a follower of what the majority of people are doing. She looks like she is desperate at the fact that she feels fooled and devastated for Romeos true identity. Without questioning the Nurse she believes what has come out of her mouth straight away. Juliet now believes that she does not stand a chose of being with her soul mate. During the whole of Act One Scene three Juliet was loyal to her parentage, respectful and was very dependant on her parent. When she had to make decisions she turned to her parents to help her decide. She acted her age, thirteen. Her upbringing was by the Nurse so she was more close to her Nurse than her mother. In Act One Scene Five, we begin to see a more mature Juliet that made her own decisions. In this Scene Juliet had changed incredibly, she made her own choices and did not rely on her parents for anything. She is more demanding towards to the Nurse and others around her. In Act One Scene Three Juliet winces at the word marriage, now she is ready to have a relationship and even get married. I believe Juliet shows her real personality in Act One Scene Five because she is not relying on anyone anymore so she can express her views freely, whereas in Act One Scene three Juliet kept her self to her self and was depended on her Mother and Father.

Pan Paniscus essays The primate pan paniscus, also known as bonobo or pygmy chimpanzee, is one of the last of the Great Apes, and was completely unknown to scientists until just seventy-five years ago. Before the day in 1929 when the true identity of its skull was found out, it sat in a Belgium museum, thought to have simply been the skull of a young chimpanzee. Fortunately, German anatomist Ernst Schwarz realized that the skull did in fact belong to an adult, but not an adult chimpanzee, marking the discovery of a new species. After the extensive research done over the years on this species, it has been discovered that the less aggressive bonobos are in fact more human-like in behavior than their chimpanzee cousins, and are the closest living relative to homo sapiens. The bonobo is located in the Central Zaire Basin in Africa, though in the center of this area bonobos cannot be found. The bonobos range was thought to be continuous, but after many observations it has been decided that the species is actually quite rare in many areas, and common only in a few scattered areas. Bonobos dwell in a variety of forest types, including primary and secondary tropical rainforests, along with some living in swamp forests. Bonobos sleep in nests that they build in trees, usually made at approximately sixty-five feet above the ground (Lee 125). In some wet regions, for example the Lake Tumba area, seasonal nomadism can be extensive. Since bonobos have no problem wading though shallow water, long-distance nomadism is quite common. This species uses a variety of locomotion patterns. While it mostly moves quadrupedally, more specifically by knuckle-walking, most often, the bonobo has been known to move bipedally on occasion (Lee 125). No Exit by Jean Paul Sartre | Analysis Analysis of No Exit No Exit by Jean Paul Sartre is a play that symbolizes the German occupation of France. He was a soldier in the French Army during World War II and had to face the humiliation of defeat and the suffering of war. No Exit takes place in a room which is supposed to be a part of hell occupied by three people who cannot stand being around each other. This is an allusion to the relationship between the French and German people living amongst each other during the war. In this play, Sartre discusses issues such as freedom, reliance on others, deception, and â€Å"bad faith† (Spark Notes, analysis). In this essay I will discuss the different ideas and symbolization that help the reader understand Sartres conveyed messages about how he views death and how one must handle the present. Also, I will discuss the characters in depth to understand why they handled the situations they were in so differently than the others by comparing and contrasting their personalities. Sartre also was a fir m believer in either a â€Å"being-in-itself†, a being that lets other people control them or a â€Å"being-for-itself†, a being who makes their own choices. Existence precedes essence† was the theme to his belief that a humans consciousness was centered on a being-for-itself, or a being-in-itself (Spark Notes, analysis). Humans have the power to control their choices, thoughts, characteristics, values and certain traits. With this power also comes responsibility for ones choices. This anxiety of responsibility causes people to step back and let others chose and control what they think and do. It is a way to cope and not take responsibility for ones actions. This in turn creates the idea of a â€Å"being-in-itself† instead of the humans usual â€Å"being-for-itself†. In this paper this idea will be discussed and compared with the characters reactions to their own personal reality in hell. The four characters that Sartre portrayed in this play are the valet, Inez, Estelle and Mr. Garcin. Garcin is a journalist from Rio and the first to be introduced to the story and enter the room. His cause of death was execution by a firing squad for trying to desert during a war. The war was not specified exactly, but his excuse for deserting was that he was a pacifist and was standing up for what he believed in. During the play, it is clear that Garcin is able to deal with the idea of their hell better than the other two characters in the room. He sees and understands that the three of them were not put together by chance but actually brought together on purpose to torture each other with the others existence. He stated that the best way to cope with this predicament was for each person to keep to themselves and leave the other be in hopes of being able to coexist peacefully. Throughout the whole story, Garcin looks back into the past and looks at Earths present and tries to make p eace with himself about the evil things he had done to his loved ones on Earth. He completely understands why he is damned to hell and does not question anything about where he is. Inez is the second person to enter the room and is the most destructive of all of the characters. She makes it her mission to cause the most hostility and problems towards the other two people in the room. Her past occupation was as a postal clerk. She believes she is in hell, because she seduced her cousins wife and practiced adultery. The reason for her death was that her lover, her cousins wife, left the stove on while they were sleeping and the gas killed them both. She clearly dislikes men and automatically hates Garcin. In many instances she is obviously competing with him. However, she quickly finds Estelle very attractive and pursues her for the rest of the story. She tries to find any way possible to be closer to Estelle and actually scares her. Estelle is the last person to enter the hell. She i s the most skittish and frightened person in the room. She relies on mirrors to remind her that she is actually there, and when she realizes there are no mirrors in the room she agrees to rely on Garcin and Inez to define her existence. She also strongly believes that she does not belong in hell, being only willing to admit to her cause of death: pneumonia. She refuses to use the word dead but asks everyone to instead use the word absent. Inez pursues her but Estelle informs them that she can only be with a man and favors Garcin. Garcin is briefly interested in Estelle but then quickly puts all of his energy into focusing on Inez and her actions. Estelle finally confesses that she had an affair on her husband and killed her illegitimate child. Lastly, the most mysterious of all characters is the valet.He was the person to lead each individual into the room, rarely answering any questions and only supplies brief, cryptic answers. He informs Garcin of the bell in the room with which h e may be summoned, but it rarely works. The valet is reminiscent of a devil picture. He gives Garcin a chance to escape but knows that because of his personality, he would never leave in fear of Inez passing judgments on him for leaving the room. The characters think that the valet toys with each of them indirectly and causes them great annoyance and problems, such as the furnishing of the room. Existentialism is the rejection of any traditional approach to objective understandings of human behavior. Existentialists choose to study and look at individual humans who exist independently of any sort of community, tradition, or law. In No Exit, it can be a perfect place for existentialism to be observed because of how each character is taken out of his or her element to be picked apart and analyzed. Since there is no way out and no mirrors, the characters are left to decide for themselves if they are really there and have an essence. Sartre questions the differences between existence and essence with each character. Each person has died on earth and is left to only survive off of what they have left of their souls. They are able to see for themselves who they really are due to their closed off situation. A mà ©nage a trios has been created in this play where each character must either ignore or accept the judgments of the others in the room. In the beginning, both Inez and Garc in have a conflict about the way Garcins face looked. She did not like the way his mouth turned and she demanded that he stop. He chose to believe her opinion and tried to stop. This is one of many examples of how these characters agree to rely on the opinion of others to define their existence. Garcin allowed Inez to define his essence. Another interesting point about this work is that Sartre did not describe hell as being a definitive place. He allows you to see that hell could be a state of mind. Sartre most likely wrote this play during the German occupation of Paris and so one can conclude that he compared the eyelid-less stare of the valet to the Nazis and their surveillance of the French people. Garcin is deeply bothered by the valet staring at him because of his fear of being judged by others questioning eyes. Sartre practices the technique of exposition, or giving a detailed background to each character, to introduce each character by placing them in an awkward and strange situation. Sartre also foreshadows many of the major points of the play before they occur later on. For example, every character is already dead and yet they still are in denial and continue to think of themselves as alive. They continue to make comments like nothing is different about their lives and refuse to accept where they are at first. Also, there is foreshadowing of the character development between Garcin and Estelle. In the beginning when Estelle first sees him, she recognizes him and connects him with her lover on earth. This foreshadows their relationship later on in the story. Existence and essence is also talked about with the example of how Estelle relies on a mirror to believe that she is really there. She relies on material things to define her existence. Inez on the other hand refuses to let other peop le define her existence or essence. â€Å"She claims that she is always painfully conscious of herself† (Spark Notes, analysis). Hell is other people is also a main topic portrayed in this play (Scridb). Estelle needs Inez to be her mirror but it is not possible for her to assist Estelle fully because they have different opinions about appearance. There will always be a difference in the way they would see each other. Inez greatly dislikes the way Garcin looks at her, and feels like he is always judging her. Garcin also hates the idea of other people judging him for what he has chosen to do and would stop at nothing to prove them wrong, even if it means him staying in the room forever. Both Estelle and Garcin refuse to let go of their pasts and accept what has already been done. They each cause their own hell, and it seems like a never ending cycle of personal torture. They still both act like they are in the past and refuse to look at the here and now, unlike Inez. She clear ly sees her present and understands that the past cannot be altered, and so she decides not to linger on it. â€Å"All you own is here† is an evidently true quote said by Inez that greatly emphasizes the idea of acceptance (Spark Notes, analysis). Garcin, towards the end proves that he has the least amount of self understanding and worth. He is unable to decide on his motives as to why he ran from the war and whether he considers himself a coward or not. He asks Estelle to tell him what her opinion is and relies on her to convince him either way. Just like Inez, Garcin is extremely worried about others laying judgments on him, and fears a lack of control. He believes that now that he is gone, he has left his memory and legacy in other peoples hands to do what they please with it. He gives his freedom to define himself to others. He has now became a being-in-itself. This is the whole reason why he chooses to not leave when the valet opens the door for him. He believes that peo ple will always judge him from the choices he has made in his past, and decides to damn himself to the room for eternity. Sartre powerfully shows that hell could simply be other people by putting Garcin, Estelle and Inez together. Hell can be a mindset and not just a physical place. Just the power of each persons gaze on one another takes away from each persons individuality as a whole. There is no need for physical torture when the mere existence of the other causes enough anguish. Each character loses and ignores their given freedom and responsibility. No Exit is an extremely interesting piece of literature which I recommend to anyone who wants to see an abstract way of looking at life and its many important themes. Responsibility for ones actions, acceptance of others, self-reliance on defining ones self, existence, concentration on looking at the present and not dwelling on the future are very important ways of operating life which are echoed throughout this work. Cathy’s Feelings for Edgar and Heathcliff ========================================= In this essay I am going to explain Cathy’s feelings for both Edgar Linton and Heathcliff. She had complex relationships with both Edgar and Heathcliff starting from when she was young. In her youth Cathy spent a lot of time with Heathcliff. This is the time when she first fell in love with him. She used to spend a lot of time running out to the moors with him. They would never be apart and shared everything with each other. The first time she met Edgar was when she went to Thrushcross grange. She stayed there for 5 weeks and came back cleaner and more sophisticated. The reason she went there was because Heathcliff herself snuck out to the moors. They went to thrushcross grange. But they were noticed through a window, by Edgar and his sister Isabelle. They took Cathy into the house, but not Heathcliff. When she came back from the grange, Cathy’s feelings hadn’t changed for Heathcliff but she felt that she was now in a higher social class to him and that she was distanced from him because of it. He thought that he was dirty. She said to him, â€Å" If you wash your face and brush your hair you will be alright.† This hurts Heathcliff. She hates it when Heathcliff is treated badly. She often expresses this. As Cathy gets older she starts to spend a lot more time with Edgar. After several visits to Wuthering Heights Edgar asks her to marry her and she accepts. She talks to Nelly (a housekeeper) about his proposal and she asks why she wants to marry him. She says it is because â€Å" he is handsome, young and cheerful, and rich and loves me.† Nelly doesn’t agree with her decision because she thinks the reasons aren’t good enou... ...e to either Heathcliff or Edgar. Both Edgar and Heathcliff are very upset. Heathcliff was angry that she died because they had began to show their love for each other again. He didn’t want to live in a world where he couldn’t find her. Heathcliff would rather be haunted by her. He says â€Å" you said I killed you- Haunt me then! The murdered do haunt their murderers.† This shows his distraught state of mind at the time of Cathy’s death. Edgar however, was less angry about her death and grieved more quietly. He acted very solitude. He had no communication with anyone for hours and did not sleep or eat. Up to her death, Catherine Linton’s feelings for Heathcliff did not change. She always loved him, even whilst she was married to Edgar. Her feelings for Edgar were also strong, but they were never quite as strong as for Heathcliff and Edgar resented this.

Frank Tsiboe Ms. Brooks 9th Honors LA 21 November, 2011 A Word To The Wise Is Enough: Look at me now, you see a student but no one will have ever thought I was just someone adding up to the number of students at school. I was once the person who didn’t care about my education or future because I thought I would always have my parents, but I grew up and understood they won’t always be there for me. I remember I hardly had a B or an A until my mom told me what I didn’t know. I didn’t know I had a chance a lot of people didn’t have, I didn’t know I had a chance a lot of people wish they had. Once I brought my report card and it wasn’t good at all. Then my mom sat me down and told me something that changed my life. She told me she didn’t have the chance I was getting and she wished she had completed school but her parents were never there for her. My mom lived with her grandmother who took care of her and saw her through her school but unfortunately she couldn’t complete school, unfortunately she had to drop out because there was no money to support her through school. she had to struggle to get It’s funny because my mom actually had the same problem as I had but then she realized she wasn’t hurting anybody but herself, but nobody had to sit her down to talk to her she realized it by herself. She later changed her attitude her school and started putting an effort.

Expanding Descriptive Verb Use One of the most important steps in improving writing skills is expanding the use of more descriptive language when describing actions. Students tend to repeat verb usage: He said..., She told him..., She asked..., He ran quickly..., He walked across the room.... The target of this lesson plan is to get students more aware of the subtle variations that they can employ by using more descriptive verbs such as: He insisted on..., She giggled..., They nibbled on..., etc. Aim Improve descriptive verb usage in writing Activity Vocabulary expansion activity followed by writing activity focusing on expanding on a bare-bones extract Level Upper intermediate to advanced Outline Write the verbs say, laugh, walk, eat, think, drink on the board and ask students to divide into small groups to think up as many synonyms for these verbs as they can.Once students have finished this exercise, pool the results together as a class. You may want to have a student take notes and photocopy the class results.Have students return to their groups to do the exercise below matching general meaning verbs to more specific verbs.Once students have finished, compare answers as a class. HIST - American History Since 1865 - Research Paper Example It is the legacy of that decision which since 1945 has come to have a variety of interpretations among both laymen and scholars alike. Despite the ensuing controversy, the bombing of Nagasaki was both necessary and militarily expedient. Shortly after the Hiroshima bombing President Truman addressed the American people regarding his decision and the implications it and nuclear weapons would have for the future of the country and the world. †¦It was to spare the Japanese people from utter destruction that the ultimatum of July 26 was issued at Potsdam. Their leaders promptly rejected that ultimatum. If they do not now accept our terms they may expect a rain of ruin from the air, the like of which has never been seen on this earth.2 The President in no uncertain terms sought to justify his decision as one that would prevent the costly use of manpower needed to carry out an amphibious invasion of Japan. This comes as little surprise given that by 1945 some â€Å"7,000 American fami lies had already sacrificed two or more of their boys for freedom.†3 Many Americans had grown tired of the war, then in its fourth year. Truman made it clear that his decision stemmed from the sole desire to utterly destroy and annihilate Japan’s war-making capacity and shock that country into surrender. The decision to bomb Nagasaki therefore was a pragmatic one. Secretary of War at the time, Henry L. Stimson, played a major role in the decision to use the bomb on both Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A recent biography of Stimson by Prof. Sean L. Malloy has claimed that Stimson took part in the most significant foreign policy decision of the twentieth century: â€Å"to use nuclear weapons against Japan and as a diplomatic tool against the Soviet Union.†4 Revisionist historians have long sought to claim that the use of the bomb was to intimidate the USSR and not due to real military needs. Many historians today look to Truman and Stimson as being the two biggest factors in the decision to use the bomb. They assert the president’s role by virtue of his office and Stimson’s role by virtue of his political influence with the president. Stimson supported both Truman’s reasoning and his decision. The fact that he saw the practical effects of the bomb for diplomatic and political ends after the war is not surprising. Given that the post-war world was shaping up to be one dominated by the US, a weakened Britain, and a war-ready and war-ravaged Soviet Union, men like Stimson (who had far more foreign policy experience than Truman) were well aware of the implications of atomic weaponry. And yet the war in the Pacific Theatre had been an especially sanguine one. This is not to say that the European Theatre was nothing to fret about, after all death and mayhem are, in the end, death and mayhem. Many accounts of American soldiers who fought in both Europe and the Pacific often detail the outright perseverance, refusal to surrender, fight-t il-death mentality of the Japanese as being somehow more pronounced than in other armies’ soldiers. Japanese tenacity was well demonstrated and DOWNFALL (the code name for an invasion of the Japan) assumed a death toll of at least 500,000 and as much as 1 million.5 The unanimity of Japanese defense commanders is striking. Navy and air commanders presided over mere remnants of their forces, but the Japanese spirit, and their suicide devices, still gave them hope.
